John Thwaites, Piano
John Thwaites performs regularly in the major festivals across Europe, broadcasts for the BBC and others, and has issued a string of critically acclaimed recordings. As a member of the Primrose Piano Quartet he commissioned a major new work by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (premiered in Cheltenham), inspired a set of variations on a Burns Air (premiered at London’s King’s Place), and has issued many recordings for Meridian, including a Five Star Choice for Classic FM Magazine (Bridge and Howells).
John’s work with quartets includes, memorably, the Dante Quartet – their recording together of Lyapunov for Duttton Digital was a BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Month.
John’s more recent teaching career includes posts at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is Course Director of the Cadenza International Summer Music School, a piano and strings festival resident at the Purcell School.
Highlights under the conductor’s baton include Verdi’s Requiem with musicians of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the combined forces of Bridge of Weir and Greenock Philharmonic Choral Societies.
Away from the keyboard, John is working on a play which will revolve around dramatic tensions in the lives of two artists as they prepare to perform Cesar Franck’s A major Sonata.
